Just for Fun

Smiling

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking.
When there are clouds in the sky
you’ll get by.

If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through
For you.

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide every trace of sadness.
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying.
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile-
If you just smile.

Research studying the connection between human facial expressions and the human brain suggests that our minds control how we feel based on even the slightest expression—like a smile. Even a forced smile does cause change of mood and any “sad” song you like (or the one above), will help you feel the difference a smile can make. A good, sappy ballad that evokes melancholy experienced from the past can trick our minds and have us feeling sad even when we’re not unhappy. Unless you need a good cry, smiling during a woeful tune helps you connect with the song’s lyrics, harmony and composition and actually makes you feel better.

If only it were that easy in our relationships: a smile could erase harsh words spoken, increase our compatibility, and a grin would forgive all actions. Beaming instead of brooding is a start anyway. And mom, you were right all those times you urged me to smile 😉
